New Format for 2020 and Beyond

January 18, 2020 – Happy new year everyone! It’s Zohan789 here and I’m going to be breaking down the new competitive format for 2020 and beyond. Our old familiar setup of doing two seasons from Jan to Aug and then Worlds in Oct to Dec will be changing to an events-based model. This is a competitive arrangement similar to MMA/Boxing and very closely resembles the UFC model.

We will have two divisions: “Semi Pro” and “Collegiate”… Each division will consist of ten (10) teams and their rankings will be determined by a number of performance-based factors. Each division also has a “Champion” or “Title Holder”, teams that ascend the upper ranks will be given a shot at the title – the Rankings will be updated weekly (see here: Rankings). There are two types of matches going forward:

1) Title Fight – ie; ABL 100 – First Blood Marauders (FBM) vs Recon 5 (R5)

  • Best of 5 Series, the winner is declared the Divisional Champion and Title Holder
  • Events will be scheduled well in advance to accommodate schedules

2) Fight Night  – ie; ABL Fight Night – Team Fish Taco (TFT) vs Dramatik Gaming (DRMK)

  • Best of 3 Series, the winner/lose will rise/fall in the Rankings based on their performance
  • These matches are used as an opportunity for teams to climb the ranks
  • Events will be scheduled well in advance to accommodate schedules

In May 2020 the top teams based on their Rankings will be invited to participate in our first ever Summer Invitational 2020 (more details on that to come) as well as our 2nd ever ABL World Championship 2020. Good luck everyone and we will see you on the rift!

FAQ: How often will matches be played?

On average there will be atleast one series happening per week.

FAQ: Is there promotion and relegation in the Top 10 Rankings?

Yes, if a team consistently performs poorly and is in the bottom of the Rankings they will be knocked out of the Top 10 and a new contender will be given the opportunity to take their spot.

FAQ: How were the Rankings determined?

The Rankings are determined by performance in the semi pro scene (can be from other leagues, tournaments, etc) also by wins and win streaks.

FAQ: Are we allowed to call out or challenge other teams?

Yes, if two teams are adamant to face each other and jockey for position, they can DM me (Zohan789) to propose a match and we will consider it.

FAQ: How will reschedules work in this new format?

We do not anticipate very many (if any) reschedules as we will be working with team owners to come up with a date/time that fits their schedules.
